What Are Meta Tags and Why Do They Matter?

Meta tags are invisible HTML elements placed in the <head> of your page. Search engines and social media platforms read them to understand what your page is about and decide how to display it in results and shares.

The title tag and meta description directly control the blue headline and grey snippet shown in Google search results. A well-written title boosts click-through rates (CTR), which Google uses as a ranking signal. A compelling description can dramatically increase the number of people who click through from search results.

Open Graph Tags — Social Media Sharing

When someone shares your page on Facebook, LinkedIn, or WhatsApp, those platforms read the Open Graph (OG) meta tags to build the preview card. Without OG tags, platforms guess the title, description, and image — often picking something completely wrong. Adding correct OG tags ensures every share of your page looks professional and on-brand.

The most important OG tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. The OG image should be 1200×630 pixels for the best display across all platforms.

Twitter Card Tags

Twitter (now X) uses its own set of meta tags instead of Open Graph. The summary_large_image card type shows a large image above the title and description — this format performs best for engagement. The summary type shows a smaller thumbnail to the left.

Not always. Google may replace your meta description with a snippet it extracts from your page content if it thinks another excerpt is more relevant to the user's search query. Writing a clear, keyword-rich description improves the chances Google will use yours — but it's not guaranteed.
index/noindex tells Google whether to include this page in search results. follow/nofollow tells Google whether to follow links on this page. Use noindex, nofollow for pages like login pages, thank-you pages, or internal admin pages that shouldn't appear in search results.
A canonical URL tells Google which version of a page is the "official" one when the same content is accessible from multiple URLs (e.g., with and without /, or with tracking parameters). It prevents duplicate content penalties by consolidating ranking signals onto a single URL.
It's a good starting point, but you can customise them separately. The page title is optimised for search engines (keyword-first). The OG title can be more conversational or engagement-focused for social media. For most pages, keeping them the same is perfectly fine.
