How to Calculate Percentages

Percentages express a number as a fraction of 100. They appear everywhere — discounts, tax rates, exam scores, salary increases, interest rates and statistics. Understanding the four main percentage calculations covers almost every real-world use case.

What Is X% of Y? (Finding a Percentage Value)

The most common calculation. Formula: Result = (X ÷ 100) × Y. Examples: 20% of 500 = 100. 8.5% GST on ₹2,000 = ₹170. 15% tip on a $60 bill = $9.

X Is What Percentage of Y? (Percentage Comparison)

Used to express one number as a percentage of another. Formula: % = (X ÷ Y) × 100. Examples: 45 out of 60 marks = 75%. A salary of ₹40,000 out of a budget of ₹5,00,000 = 8%.

Percentage Change (Increase or Decrease)

Measures how much a value changed relative to the original. Formula: % Change = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100. A positive result is an increase; negative is a decrease. Examples: Price from ₹800 to ₹1,000 = +25%. Sales from 500 to 400 = −20%.

Increase / Decrease a Value by a Percentage

To increase by X%: multiply by (1 + X/100). To decrease by X%: multiply by (1 − X/100). Example: ₹5,000 salary increased by 12% = ₹5,000 × 1.12 = ₹5,600.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 150 = (20 × 150) / 100 = 30. Alternatively, convert the percentage to a decimal (20% = 0.20) and multiply: 0.20 × 150 = 30.
How do I calculate percentage change?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Formula: ((New − Old) / Old) × 100. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease. Example: from 80 to 100 = ((100 − 80) / 80) × 100 = +25%.
What is percentage difference?
Percentage difference measures how different two values are relative to their average. It is always positive and has no direction. Formula: |V1 − V2| / ((V1 + V2) / 2) × 100. For example, 40 and 60: |40 − 60| / ((40 + 60) / 2) × 100 = 20 / 50 × 100 = 40% difference.
How do I reverse a percentage increase?
To find the original value before a percentage increase, divide the final value by (1 + percentage/100). For example, if a price of ₹1,120 includes a 12% increase, the original price was ₹1,120 / 1.12 = ₹1,000. Use the "Decrease by %" mode and enter the same percentage to find the reversed value.
