What Is BMI and How Is It Calculated?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical value calculated from your height and weight. It is widely used by health organisations as a quick screening tool to classify weight status. The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). In imperial units: BMI = (weight in lbs ÷ height in inches²) × 703.

WHO BMI Classification for Adults

The World Health Organisation classifies BMI for adults (18+ years) as follows: Below 18.5 — Underweight. 18.5–24.9 — Normal (healthy) weight. 25.0–29.9 — Overweight. 30.0 and above — Obese (Class I: 30–34.9, Class II: 35–39.9, Class III: 40+).

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle. A highly muscular athlete may register as "overweight" or even "obese" despite having low body fat. Similarly, older adults may have a normal BMI but high body fat due to muscle loss. BMI also does not account for where fat is distributed — abdominal fat carries higher health risks than fat elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy BMI?
According to the WHO, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy (normal weight) for adults. A BMI below 18.5 indicates underweight, 25–29.9 indicates overweight, and 30 or above indicates obesity. Different thresholds apply for children and Asian populations.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kg divided by height in metres squared. For example, a person who is 70 kg and 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. In imperial units: BMI = (weight in lbs ÷ height in inches²) × 703.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI is a population-level screening tool. It cannot distinguish muscle from fat and does not account for age, gender, ethnicity or fat distribution. Athletes and very muscular people often have high BMIs without excess body fat. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete assessment.
What is the healthy weight range?
The healthy weight range shown by the calculator is the weight range that would give a BMI of 18.5–24.9 for your specific height. This is a general guideline; individual ideal weight depends on body composition, muscle mass, age and other factors.
