How to Calculate a Tip

Tipping is a way to show appreciation for good service. The standard formula is simple: multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage to get the tip, then add it to the bill for the total.

Standard Tip Percentages

10% — Basic or below-average service, counter service or takeaway. 15% — Average service, a fair baseline in most countries. 18% — Good service, the default at many US restaurants. 20% — Very good service, the most common target in the US. 25%+ — Exceptional service or for a special occasion.

Splitting the Bill

Use the people stepper to divide the total equally. The per-person amount shown includes both their share of the meal and the tip. For parties where people ordered very different amounts, calculate each person's tip individually.

Round Up Option

The "round up" toggle rounds the final total to the nearest whole dollar — making it easier when paying with cash and leaving a slightly larger tip as a result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?
The standard in the US is 18–20% for restaurant service. For exceptional service 25% or more is appreciated. For takeaway, counter service or delivery, 10–15% is typical. In many countries in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, tipping is not customary or a small rounding-up is sufficient.
Should I tip before or after tax?
In the US it is common to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the full total (including tax) is also widely practiced. The difference is small — on a $50 pre-tax bill with 10% tax, a 20% tip pre-tax is $10, vs $11 on the after-tax total.
How do I split the bill unevenly?
This calculator splits equally. For uneven splits, enter each person's individual subtotal separately and calculate their tip amount individually. Add those together for the full group total.
Is tipping mandatory?
No, tipping is voluntary in most countries, though in the US many service workers rely on tips as a significant part of their income. Some restaurants add an automatic service charge (gratuity) for large groups — always check your bill before adding an additional tip.
